The emancipator's immitators (aka Little Richard's copyists),
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Holy Mackerel!: Pretenders to Little Richard's Throne (Audio CD)
Having been a fan of Richard's for over 50 years, I was fascinated to hear Mark Lamarr's sampling of this CD on his "Shake, rattle and roll" Radio 2 programme recently.
On the strength of the clips he played, which included the one track by the man himself, I bought it. It represents a mixed bag in truth, but on every track the joy, enthusiasm and sheer nervous energy of Richard shine through the immitations. It's clear to me that some of the singers were hoping to cash in on the fact that Richard had left a gap in the market. For others, it appears that they are making an effort to recreate the impossible by valiant efforts.
The lasting impression, though, is that the influence he has always had emerges here without ever reaching his own extraordinary heights.
My understanding is that Richard has now retired (where have we heard that before?). If it's true he leaves a remarkable legacy and the homage paid here is another declaration of that fact.
