I have, up until now, been listening to music via a pair of Grado SR80's. Today I received my gorgeous pair of AKG q701's. They were cold when I unpacked them having been sitting in the back of a delivery van all morning but even with cold and unused drivers, the difference between the AKG's and the 9 year old Grado's is, quite frankly, huge! For the money, the Grado's are very good headphones and have served me well. But the AKG's are in a totally different league. Even with only 30 minutes of listening on the drivers.
The sound is beautifully controlled and just doesn't ever seem hard or harsh on the ears. The grado's sometimes made me wince slightly when sounds went into the upper frequency band but the AKG's don't seem to lose control in the same way.
Some people have said that these aren't for rock music but they sound fine to me. Listening to Katatonia's "Dead End Kings", "Dethrowned and Uncrowned" and "The Great Cold Distance" is a very enjoyable experience. The music is so much more controlled and the actual soundstage is quite a bit larger than the Grado's. Bass response on the AKG's is very similar to the Grado's. i.e punchy and warm but not dominating. Again it is very well controlled and sounds very clean.
The Grado's seem to sound raw and unfocused now. Cymbals in particular don't seem to sound quite right.
I expected the AKG's to sound hard and bright straight out of the box but that is very far from reality. Even now, they sound warm and clean. No harshness in the upper frequencies. Tight and controlled lower frequency.
I am so looking forward to the burn in process. The Grado's sounded awful when I first listened to them many years ago. The eventually mellowed out into a fairly good sounding set of cans. But the AKG's have already trounced them with only 20 mins on the drivers. The Akg's really do sound like a good quality hi-fi system on the head. Very pleased.
