This review is from: Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book (Second Edition): Over 200 Classic Recipes (Paperback)
This is an essential book for the novice and experienced baker. I've been baking for 12 years and this is my 'go to' book.
No nonsense, straightforward, easy to understand with helpful tips (truly helpful tips, not just the author showing off their foodie credentials). Every recipe in this book not only works first time but tastes gorgeous.
For the novice baker there is plenty of guidance and tips and simple recipes to get you started - none of which use odd ingredients or complicated / expensive equipment (because not EVERYONE has a kitchen aid mixer) and its refreshing to hear someone say that 'no, you don't need £10 bottles of Vanilla Extract...'
For the family baker there is a section of child-friendly baking recipes as well as family staples. I can safely say that I've not bought in a cake or biscuit since getting this book as its faster to make it myself than it is to drive to the shops.
For the experienced baker these are very solid, time honoured recipes that withstand quite a lot of modifying and substitution. Nearly ever recipe here is a fantastic blank canvas for you to work your own ideas on.
This is not boutique baking, seasonal, organic etc... its not buzzword cookery from 4* Chefs - this is honest home baking. Quick, simple, satisfying recipes that appeal to everyone, plus a few fancy ones for special occassions, from a true domestic goddess.
