Rather shorter than her other books nevertheless the ground is covered in this book. So far it is a stand alone novel about an illegitimate son of a magnate of England who although the favourite of his father because of his illegitimacy has to work very hard and claw his way up the ladder by becoming a mercenary and then marrying well.
The book is fast paced and action packed and deals with all sorts of issues such as family rivalry, arranged marriage and the brutality of the medieval period.
Elizabeth Chadwick has a real talent for drawing her readers into the story and describing lives which were lived nearly 1000 years ago! You can almost hear the thundering hoof beats and the rasp of the sword and forget you are sitting in a comfy chair or even reading in bed!!
The story flows well and comes to a logical if somewhat predictable end but is highly enjoyable all the same.
Unlike some of her novels this book is about a fictitious person but is believable that somebody like Joscelin de Gael lived in England around this time.
An enjoyable read and one to recommend the reason for the 4 star rating is because I wish it could of been longer as I finished it very quickly!
