Don't Judge a Book By its Cover,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Forsaken (Paperback)I first saw this book in WHSmith but my mum made me buy it from Amazon because everything is always cheaper on here ;) . The cover immediately caught my eye. I know everyone says don't judge a book by its cover but I'm always guilty of it. I won't pick up a book unless the cover looks good. On the cover, Alenna looks like a "badass" *in my American voice* and looks like she could kick some butt so that's what I expected to read about in the book. I was wrong though...
Alenna is a sixteen year old girl living in a government-corrupt country called the UNA. She takes the GPPT test that all sixteen year olds have to take and ends up failing, so is then transported to The Wheel. She's forsaken. The test basically tests for "psychopathic" traits. The first two chapters of the book were informative but I found them quite boring. It's only when Alenna gets to the Wheel that the pace starts to pick up. Reading about the teenagers' lives on The Wheel reminded me of the show, Shipwrecked.
I liked the characters in this book. Alenna is a nice girl, she's kind of timid and lacks fierceness so I don't see her as a heroine at all. She's not like Katniss (Hunger Games) or Tris (Divergent). She was a follower and let everybody else do all the work for her. I didn't really build up a connection with Alenna at all, she was just nice. I was quite disappointed with the lukewarm romance element. Liam and Alenna only spoke to each other around four times in the book and even then, they weren't proper conversations. I would have liked to see them interact more.
Overall, I did enjoy this book because it was interesting and I will be reading the rest of the Trilogy. I don't feel as if the pages in the book live up to the cover. They have a girl on the front, carrying arrows on her back, that looks like she will hurt you if she has to, but Alenna doesn't even know how to fight or aim a bow and arrow...
