I enjoyed many of these stories — certainly enough to stay with the book to the end. Some stories are a perfect fusion of penetrating observations and a penetrating general conclusion. A few do contain sharp human observation but are, as stories, just wistful comments on life. A very small number — especially those about the war — were for me collections of only partly digested research: not convincing, even if plausible.
If you don't expect short stories always to end in a punchline or a cunning twist, this is the book for you: much observation of what is often unexpressed in human relations.
