When I read "The Clan of the Cave Bear" about 20 years ago, I thought it one of the most interesting novels that had ever read.A novel about Neandertal man is extraordinarily difficult to make convincing. J M Auel presented a very personal but quite convincing picture of how this extinct branch of humanity actually lived and thought. One must compare WIlliam Goldings novel "The Inheritors" for a quite different and equally convincing picture.
Unfortunately the following novels have degenerated into a sort of soap opera with the usual cast of characters transposed 30000 years ago. One needs to be stuck in a hotel room a long way from home to have the stamina to plod through them.
