From an "Anorexic",
This review is from: An Apple a Day: A Memoir of Love and Recovery from Anorexia (Paperback)
Emma Wolf is a brilliant writer, I will give her that. However as an anorexic in recovery myself, I find this book incredibly disappointing. If I had read this book at the beginning of my recovery, it would have sent me further into the grasps of my eating disorder. Although she manages to describe some of the struggles that anorexics face, she does so in a way that portrays this very mental illness as something flimsy.
Parts of this book are practically pro-ana. She is kidding herself and the lifestyle she describes herself to have had in her darkest days of the illness just do not add up. With the amount she claimed to be eating, she would not be maintaining her weight.
I attend an eating disorder clinic and have discussed this book with the other patients many times.
We all agree- this is not an appropriate book.
