4.0 out of 5 stars Not sophomoric, 31 Aug. 2011
This review is from: The Life And Soul (Audio CD)
Most bands suffer the 'sophomore album syndrome' where their second album pales in comparison to their first. This is not the case for MamasGun. Although it appears to take on a completely different feel with themes seemingly gravitating towards the various concepts of love and relationships, The Life & Soul seems to be an album that allows the listener to kick back and enjoy life. 'Reconnection,' 'The Life and Soul,' 'Heart on a String,' and 'Rocket to the Moon,' share the light-heartedness and clever bantering that MamasGun is most known for. 'We Make It Look So Easy' and 'Heavy Hands' are reminiscent of the sound that MamasGun introduced us to in their first album. The Life & Soul album sends out some positive vibes all around. However, quite somber but still well-written and arranged, 'The Art' seemed to depart from all the other selections on the album and did not resonate MamasGun as I originally came to know them in their first album. 'Only One' makes me want to go back and listen to all my Marvin Gaye albums. 'Get a High' reminds me faintly of Sade but with a funky, rock edge. Re-arranged, I think Sade could sing it with melancholy and heartache against a full orchestra. Well, some would probably argue that Prince could sing this song -- oozing with sexuality instead of melancholy, of course. But, Andy Platts treats us to both melancholy and sexuality in his performance of 'Get a High.' Of course, the bonus track (the band's rendition of 'Bicycle') was quite a pleasant addition to the album. I cannot wait to hear what their third album will sound like and to watch these guys live on stage...
