Essential purchase for all Eels fans!,
This review is from: I Am The Messiah (Audio CD)
According to publicity surrounding this debut album, Mr. Honky is a reclusive, Californian remix wizard in his late fifties who worked his way up through the engineering desks of the recording industry – that is when he wasn’t pursing his other great passion, pottery! On closer inspection, die hard Eels fans (of which I am most definitely one) will easily recognise the unique style, and sometimes even the distinctive vocal tones, of their genius front man, Mark ‘E’ Everett.
I guess that “Messiah” is closest to E’s previous solo work, although most tracks are strong enough to sit quite comfortably on any of The Eels superb albums. This collection of songs is overflowing with quirky mixes, often held together by Hammond organ and groovy dance beats. It’s a very contemporary sound that may well be of interest to the likes of Lemon Jelly enthusiasts. And if you’re an Eels devotee like me, I promise you won’t be disappointed! It’s an absolute must for your collection.
Even though I am well aware of who is behind this brilliant work, the track “3 Turntables & 2 Microphones” kind of conjures up a picture of the artist known as MC Honky!
