Easy, varied and delicious recipes,
This review is from: Easy to Make! Pies Pies Pies (Good Housekeeping) (Paperback)
This book appears to be one of a series of books by Good Housekeeping that showcase over 100 easy recipes in a particular category - in this case pies!
There are six sections to the book: basics; savoury pies and pastries; meat, fish and vegetable tarts; sweet pies and pastries; classic sweet tarts and indulgent dessert tarts.
The basics section shows you how to make each different type of pastry (shortcrust, puff, flaky, choux etc) as well as having a few recipes for accompaniments. These recipes include salad, French dressing, chips, ice cream and custard. As well as this, there are plenty of hints and tips as well as useful information on how to peel and prepare various fruits for use in the pies. This is perfect if you're a novice or beginner cook while if you're more experienced then you can simply skip this section and move onto the pies!
Each recipe tells you whether it is easy or takes a little effort to make, the time needed for preparation and cooking as well as the nutritional content of a serving of each pie. The vegetarian recipes (of which there are 12 from the savoury sections) are clearly marked.
Another plus point for the book is that there is a handy conversion chart on the inside front cover and the recipe pages contain things such as cook's tips, variations (including how to make a recipe vegetarian) and freezing tips.
There are some new and interesting recipes as well as some classic pies contained within the book and each has its own picture which I always think helps a lot when you're looking to try new ideas. Some of the stand out recipes in this book for me were chicken and mushroom pie, sausage rolls, soured cream and onion tarts as well as all the sweets and desserts. (There are enough sweet and fruit pies in this book to keep those with a sweet tooth happy for a very long time!)
With over 100 recipes there really is something for everyone in this book. Add to that the ease of making each of the recipes and the cost - this book is definitely one that won't gather dust on your bookshelf. 5 stars.
