This review is from: Goodbye to the Age of Steam (Audio CD)
As stated in other reviews, this is a real grower and well, well worth the staying power. I have now played it non-stop over 2 hour a day for nearly 3 weeks (on the way to work and back), the first 7/8 turns I was not sure at all, the music seemed clattered with too much emphasis on vocals that I was not sure I really liked the pitch of.
But then slowly the music becomes more recognisable, understandable and at that point falls together and in my mind this is a wonderful CD, full of light and shadow, lows and highs and actually quite mature considering the age of the group. The production is good too and has benefited from the re-mixing bringing this right up to age.
I listed to the English Elect part1 again yesterday, just as a comparison, and found it inferior to this, whilst the production may be better, and one can tell that BBT has matured as a group, the great musical ideas and imagination is sadly missing. In Goodbye to the Steam Age there may have been too many ideas which means it takes a bit of time to `understand' but these are the most rewarding albums of all.
