This review is from: The Story of Decipherment: From Egyptian Hieroglyphs to Maya Script: From Egyptian Hieroglyphics to Maya Script (Paperback)
I found this book by happy accident, and although it is heavy going it was well worth the effort of hacking through it. The author is happy to present his own opinions, which are sometimes fairly ascerbic, and this enlivens what could be a stodgy text. (For instance, he clearly doesn't like Thomas Young very much - a man who is one of my heroes, but it is amusing to see him partially debunked.) The efforts of Champollion, Ventris and others to crack unknown languages in unknown scripts without the assistance of computers is particularly impressive given that Linear A has still to be deciphered even in the days of super-computers and the beginnings of quantum computers.
