5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! Well worth the modest price asked!, 6 Nov. 2013

This review is from: Khrennikov: Violin & Piano Concertos (Audio CD)
A much maligned composer since the fall of the Soviet Union, Khrennikov shows what composers besides Shostakovitch and Prokofiev were doing in the C20. It is not 'great' music by any means, but is always enjoyable and never overstays its welcome. Performances and recordings give an excellent idea of the music, and for those who enjoy the 'by-ways' of Russian music this is well worth the small price asked. Khrenikov's most famous(infamous?) work is probably the opera 'In the Storm' in which Stalin appears! This is presumably rarely performed these days, unsurprisingly, but much of Khrennilov's music is still heard in Russia, so can't be such a 'tyrant' as he is often portrayed by vitriolic writers!! Buy and make up your own mind!

Dear Mr. Groves,
A look at Russian video offerings of Khrennikov on YouTube seems to support the idea that the segment of his oeuvre most affectionately regarded in post-Soviet Russia are songs from his musical comedies--syntheses of American stuff. Agreed, it's interesting to hear some of his concert works.
Best wishes,
Dace Gisclard
