Creepy and engaging,
This review is from: Night of the Devils [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
My son picked this up for me last July at Comic Con and I have only just got round to watching it. It is Region 2 (UK) and an old plain silver DVD. The film features the original Italian dialogue and is also dubbed adequately in English. I say adequately as when Nicholas gets to the house in the woods and knocks on the door the knocking sound starts before the action and also ends before it does. Otherwise its not a bad dub. Obviously its no good for lip readers as they're all speaking Italian. The picture quality is VHS, definitely not high definition yet.
The story is about a businessman; English or American, who gets lost in the woods in Yugoslavia and stumbles across a family who are being plagued by a wurdulak, a sort of vampire or revenant that preys on its loved ones after death to save itself from being lonely in the afterlife. You won't see any fangs in this movie but some necks get bitten and blood is spilled, and consumed.
I have a lot of low budget American vampire films in my collection and most of them are rubbish but this despite the picture quality is very good. There are probably about a dozen cast members, all unknown to the general movie audience but they combine well to create an aura of genuine menace in depicting this family in the woods who live every night behind barred doors and shuttered windows and fear the knock after dark.
If you're a fan of a good story or just love vampire movies then this is one you will want to see.
