Another fine band associated with Elephant 6? It's too good to be true. And one that sounds like a cross between The Beach Boys and Pavement? Wow! But somehow, it hasn't turned out as good as it sounds . . .
The songs are catchy and well arranged, lyrics are odd, and the album is short and enjoyable, but somehow there's something missing here, some magic that sets bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control apart from the crowd. All the members of Beulah have other jobs, so just play and record together as a hobby. It shows. Whereas NMH and OTC immerse themselves in their alternative melodic world, Beulah are just occasional visitors.
Worth a try if you can't get enough of charming and kooky pop though, and a couple of the songs are great. I just can't remember which ones . . .
