This review is from: Physiognomy...Mark Seliger Photographs: The Mark Seliger Photographs (A Bullfinch Press book) (Hardcover)
Although Mark Seliger's name may not be as instantly recognisable as his contemporaries such as Mario Testino, Rankin or David LaChapelle, Physiognomy is testament thatwhen it comes to modern day image-makers, he is one of the greats. A collection of his most notable portraits (culled from the archives of various renowned magazines including Rolling Stone where he works as chief photographer), the book is a wonderland of fantastic images ranging from the elaborately staged (Jennifer Lopez, Marilyn Manson)to the brutally honest (an emotionally raw Courtney Love taken just after Kurt Cobain's suicide is particularly poignant).
At a time when it looks as if everyone really is going to have their fifteen minutes of fame, this book exclusively features those that epitomise REAL celebrity-their star quality oozing from the pages. Stars of music (Beck, U2, REM), film (Drew Barrymore, Leonardo Dicaprio, Cameron Diaz), fashion (Gisele Bundchen), comedy (Chris Rock) and television (the casts of Friends and Seinfeld) have all succumbed to the lure of Seliger's lens with spellbinding results.
In fact, whilst scanning the pages of the book, I was amazed at how famous some of these images are. Many are world renowned having been reproduced by countless newspapers and magazines across the globe, their edginess making them an instant talking point. Who could forget, for example, Jennifer Aniston's bare bottom for the cover of Rolling Stone a few years back? Or the time when Brad Pitt chose to show off his pumped-up physique (newly acquired for his role in Fight Club) in a sequinned mini-dress and Hannibal Lector-style muzzle!
Physiognomy will prove popular with hardcore photography fans and casual observers who just like looking at pictures of celebrities, the book really does cater for everyone. Even if you're a newcomer to Mark's work (or at least think you are, you may be surprised!), Physiognomy is well worth checking out. Its VIP cast almost guarantees it. One look and you'll be hooked!
