This review is from: LINDY 2 Way TosLink Digital Optical Audio Switch (Personal Computers)
Although the other reviewer for this product appears to have had a very bad experience, I have found this the perfect solution to switching between two optical sources, to feed into the single optical input to my surround sound system.
The box itself is tiny, noticeable especially if (as I have) you've previously ordered one of the cheap TosLink 3-1 switches off Amazon, which come with a clunky big analogue dial in the middle. With this version, there are a couple of differences to the cheaper versions on the market, which are:
1. It is powered, which does away with the large mechanical components, and results in a more precise mecahnism operated by a small DIN style switch on the side of the unit. My assumption is that this means the optical connection can be more precisely lined up, which means a perfect signal every time - I don't think it amplifies the output at all.
2. It is about 10 times the price of the cheaper alternatives, but makes up for it by not being nearly as visible, and obviously better engineered when you hold it in your hands. You get much higher quality materials for you money, as well as a more precise build, all of which is important when linking optical signals together, as being the slightest bit 'out' results in at best intermittent dropping of the signal, at worst an eerie silence.
Do beware that there is another very similar Lindy product on the site, which is an optical splitter - so takes one input to two outputs. This is designed to take two inputs, and allow your to choose which to feed into one output - which it does admirably.
