I bought this movie by sheer accident on pay-per-view when I pressed the wrong button on the remote control - I thought, oh well I'm stuck with it now so I might as well watch it. And I am so glad I did. Completely wonderful from start to finish. I absolutely loved the old-style animation and for me it was far more powerful than the animation we see so often now in movies like 'Shrek' for example - not that 'Shrek' or its ilk are bad, but I just found the gritty style much more compelling visually. This is definitely not a film for kids, but it features possibly the cutest cartoon-girl ever in the adorable Mia, and the story is poignant and so emotional that you often forget it's animation. The subject matter is uncomfortable at times, and there are moments of brutality, but I didn't find the violence gratuitous. There has been mention of 'Leon' and I too thought of that movie whilst watching this, but the similarity really ends there as the relationship between Mia and August is very different. A skilful and brilliant piece of film making, well written and engaging, and I'm not ashamed to say I did cry at the closing scene. My only regret is that it finished so soon. Highly recommended.

Great review, I love the fact we both bought it by accident. Yours on sky and I picked up my copy in HMV whist looking for anime :-D
