Who needs actors?! One of my favourite films ever.,
This review is from: Once [DVD] (DVD)This is absorbing, heartwarming... an absolute pleasure from start to finish. I suppose how much you like this film will depend on how much you like its music. Unlike most musicals or films about musicians or Bollywood staples, the music in Once IS the film; the film IS the music. The plot and characters - engaging and perfectly realized as they respectively are - feel not so much incidental to the music as utterly integral to the music (and vice-versa!). For me, the film's highlights were entirely in the music - especially the songs featured in the boy and girl's first jamming session in the music shop and in her evening walk home from the convenience store. If acousticy, singer-songwritery, angsty tunes aren't your cup of tea, watch it anyway! In spite of (often extreme) Metal being my genre of choice, I have to say I absolutely adored the music - and especially the passion and heart and soul therein.
There's no doubt that the two leads are fantastic musicians. The fact that they have barely any acting experience between them is astonishing. Or maybe not. The film doesn't look as if it contains any acting at all. It's absolutely naturalistic. Markéta Irglová, especially, totally lives the part.
I've seen a lot of great films lately. But there's something magical, undefinable, about Once which, for me, elevates it above practically anything else I can think of right now!
