Unpredictable results - would return if I hadn't thrown the box away,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ3EB-K Compact Camera - Black (16.1MP, 10x Optical Zoom with Leica DC Lens, 25mm Wide Angle Lens, HD Video Recording) 2.7 inch LCD (Electronics)
My last few cameras have been compact Canons, and I thought I'd try this as there were lots of positive reviews.
Overall this camera seems to be able to take some excellent pictures, but it's also quite hit and miss; the most obvious fault is the poor focussing. Initially the photo looks okay, but when viewed on a larger screen, you can see something is not right. Is this a focus issue or noise reduction processing I don't know. This problem is much worse when using the optical zoom. I found myself already taking several pictures together and hoping that one is actually focused on the subject.
There is no macro mode as such, you just point the camera at something close-up and it does it all, but again when the picture is in focus, wow, stunning detail. But time and time again it simply will not focus on the subject..Place your subject in the green box, it indicates correct focus but no, yet again it's focussed on the background or nothing. So basically with a largish macro subject it works fine, but try to get say a picture of a insect on a branch - you just can't unless you're lucky.
The menu system seems overly simple, with a lack of subtle adjustments and video in .MOV format only, which eats storage space and has a 10.5 minute clip limit. If you want to say change from single shot to multishot, you have to click through the menu. Surely a couple of programmable buttons or menus, would allow one or two press selection.
Honestly I can't recommend this camera - the Leica lens does not make up for its plastic feel, soft focus pictures and lack of proper menus.
Will probably end up buying a another canon.

miss mr somerville says:
my son lost his lumix sz1 on a school trip (how annoying!) and he pestered me constantly for a replacement,as he was on another trip a few days later and fortunately i was insured. so as he was in such a rush i bought the sz3 from argos actually as i could not get the original there. Initially he was delighted but within a few days he/ we realised that like the feedback from markx 78 before yes the focussing is dreadful on small things close up, this is a particular problem as my son is obsessed with birds, flowers and butterflies. so we intend to get a refund and order the sz1 from amazon as he was able to achieve wonderful pictures close up with his old one.

I initially found this issue too. The answer I think is to switch from the "IA" mode to either the "normal" or scenes modes. The IA mode has the auto focus which doesn't like to focus in the middle (for some reason!), however the other modes I believe will do. (Although there is no "spot" focus setting regretfully). Hope that is helpful.
