When Worms Attack,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Squirm [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
The faults of Squirm are many - how couldn't they be? shooting a killer worm movie on a low budget would stretch Hitchcock himself. In fact this film does many things right : the cast are likeable, the hillbilly milieu is well sketched, there's a nice sense of knowing humour (cf. the scene in the Italian restaurant - hilarious!) and the early shock scenes are well done. The big problem is an obvious one - worms aren't scary, hence no suspense - the film meanders towards a climactic final 20 minutes where tons of spaghetti are thrown at the problem to no great effect. We never feel any sense of real danger and proceedings are best enjoyed as a B movie pastiche rather than a straight ahead horror/thriller. Still, this is preferable to the CGIfest that would result if a remake (unlikely) was attempted today. Picture quality is excellent and there is a director commentary which I've still to listen to. Got to be worth a couple of quid for undiscerning horror fans.
