Not so much 'abridged' as 'amputated',
This review is from: The Selfish Giant (Hardcover)
I am furious! This version has had the original ending amputated, and instead ends with all the children playing happily in the giant's garden. The whole point of the story is to illustrate the naturalness of Death, and the power of redemption (he is forgiven for his selfishness and is led off to heaven in the hands of the Christ Child). I'm a staunch Atheist, but I think this is one of the most important sacred texts in children's literature, illustrating the concept of divine forgiveness in a beautifully subtle way. Sure, the illustrations are lovely, but what a huge mistake to have interfered with one of our great authors. Amazon should really state that this is an abridged version.

The first thing in the product description makes it clear it's abridged.
