A guiding light,
This review is from: The Best Of 1990-2000 (2CD+DVD) (Audio CD)
In a time when there is so much rubbish in the charts, U2 remain the guiding light, at the forefront of music. Alright this is another 'Best Of' but with so many to choose from, once again they are far the best.
After shedding their 80's skins U2 realised they had become 'predictable' so along came the shake up of Achtung Baby and with it Fly shades and Zoo Tv. The new darker, more ironic U2 played with new sounds and more subversive feelings.
Their journey would take them into the recorded-on-tour Zooropa album. This was even more experimental the 'Achtung Baby' but captured the tour madness and fun which they were experiencing well.
However, often mistakenly seen as U2's failure, their next album Pop went even further, with the group sampling techno dance beats and merging it into their own unique sound.
With All That You Can't Leave Behind bringing the band back to basics and back to being the best band in the world. Only by buying all these albums could you fully appreciate all the complexities but this compilation is good enough for a summary.
Achtung Baby is well represented. The moving 'One' and funky 'Mysterious Ways' and 'Even Better' being counter balanced by 'Until the...' and the awesome single 'The Fly'. Zooropa is less well represented but aptly with the beautiful 'Stay' and the reworked mantra of 'Numb'.
U2 clearly unhappy with Pop, have extensively reworked 'Gone' and 'Staring' brilliantly, less so 'Discotheque'. All of which contain a flood of sounds and beats which are, in some ways, deceptively un-U2.
We are then brought up to date with the classic anthems of 'Beautiful Day' and 'Stuck in a moment'.
Also included are the heartbreaking 'Miss Sarajevo' (from Passengers) and the rocking Batman Forever theme music 'Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me, Kill me'.
The new songs, 'Electrical Storm' and 'Hands That Built' are both well crafted and the second in particular a moving tribute to America.
Also included is a B-sides disc, which though for the most part has remixed songs, does contain some gems such as the insane 'Lady with the spinning head' and peaceful 'Summer Rain'.
If you like U2, you'll love this. If you like the 80's U2 but don't know about them in the 90's you'll love this. If you hated U2 in the 80's you'll love this. If you're alive you'll love this!
