Just a Good Ole Boy,

This review is from: The Ozark Mountain Daredevils/ It'll Shine When it Shines (Audio CD)
For those of you lucky to have seen the Ozarks on their Spring 1976 tour of the UK this is a must have. For those of you whom haven't heard of this group it's time to fill a gap.
Blessed with fine country musicians, superb songwriters, and seemingly at least four great voices the Ozarks are a country group with pure country origins who were happy to move in the direction of rock, whilst most country rock of that time was from artists moving in the opposite direction. Their excellent 2nd LP 'It'll Shine When It Shines' is worth the price but it's great to hear the many fine songs from the more embryo and uneven 1st LP such as 'If You Want To Get to Heaven', 'Road to Glory' and 'Standing on a Rock'. The second LP hardly misses a beat although 'Jackie Blue' (their hit) was always my least favourite track.
As the sleeve notes point out both of these gems were produced by the acclaimed Glyn Johns and the whole production is superb without losing the nature and charm of the group and their music. My only gripe is the sleeve notes where the erudite and knowledgeable John Tobler seems to want to tell you about everyone and everything but the Ozarks.
Those concerts were a joy and I've never seen so many happy faces leaving the Hammersmith Odeon (now Apollo). This similarly is a joy.
