The Cynical Cyclone v The Smiling Slugger,
This review is from: The Ride of Our Lives: Roadside Lessons of an American Family (Random House Large Print) (Hardcover)
This book is funny, whitty, truthful and it was a joy to read. It is a no bull.... account of a family's trip through some of the US. Mike Leonard feels he needs to go with his parents Marge " The Cynical Cyclone"(likes cursing, wine, giggling) and Jack "The Smiling Slugger" (all round Mr. Nice guy, non drinker) and let them see the country one last time. He takes his two sons, daughter and wives with him. His wife and another daughter are left at home awaiting the birth of his grand child. So off we go in the RV's and boy do we learn some stuff. We learn about the people who lived through the depression, the Irish in New Jersey, the colleges Marge and Jack attended. We learn of Mike's happy childhood in Chiargo shaped by his parents, brothers and Grandma. The book is not full of setiment and the stories are funny and real. You can only come away liking this family. And admiring Marge and Jack and there parents before them who gave all for the American Dream not for themselves but for their kids. This book will please you and you will want others to read it.
