Perfect Intro For Referendum,

This review is from: Road to Referendum (Hardcover)
Iain Macwhirter appears in the tv series of the same name, a slick and well presented show. Unsurpsingly, the book covers a much larger time scale than the show, beginning in the 1300s.
That sets the tone for the book - if you know nothing about Scottish history, and I have to admit this book made me realise how little I did know - this is the place to start. Macwhirter spins through hundreds of years of history effortlessly to give you the context of the Scottish character for later.
The real strength is when he hits the late 90s, telling the story about the Scottish parliament. You actually forget what a disaster it was initially!
Macwhirter's argument is that nationalism rose up when the Kirk stopped having influence and Scots fell out of love with the Empire. It's provocative but well founded. I haven't decided how I'll vote in the referendum but I feel better informed about the positives and negatives of the debate. A first class, accessible book.
