PVR is poor,
This review is from: Samsung Series 5 F5500 32-inch Widescreen Full HD Smart LED TV (discontinued by manufacturer) (Electronics)
This is my second Samsung Smart TV, this one being for the bedroom.
I specifically bought one with a PVR function so that my wife can watch EastEnders in bed but sadly, although my older D series model supports "series recording", this TV does not, which means I would have to schedule every single episode.
Series recording has been around for ages and Samsung have implemented it on TVs previously so they must have specifically disabled it from the current range. According to the support helpline, none(!) of their F series TVs can perform this most basic PVR feature.
Also the HD picture quality on my older set is better.

Surely the BBC I-Player should take care of this! Tell me if I'm wrong.

Yes, assuming you only ever watch BBC and you're ok with buying an HD TV and then watching content at lower quality. Other catchup services are also available but they all consume bandwidth out of your broadband allowance. The point is that this TV is advertised as having PVR capability and it doesn't to any usable extent.
Sure there are workarounds but if you're reading this review, you now know what you don't get with this TV.

Is this such a big negative? Does it make the TV poor value? Are there other similar TV's that are better value? I'd appreciate your further evaluation.

Sorry but I can't comment on how much value this feature would be to you. If you weren't going to use it then I'm sure the TV will be fine. For me it is a big negative. I wanted the TV to be able to record a few programmes that my wife and I regularly watch so they are sitting there for our convenience. I have had two hard disk PVRs and another Samsung TV that have all managed to do this perfectly successfully despite being older.
The TV is advertised as having a PVR but in reality it doesn't. As well as not having a series record function, you can't even rely on it to record when you set the timer. The VHS machine I had 30 years ago was more reliable.

Have you complained to Samsung? If you have what has been their response? The solution might be to have a software upgrade if available. I am avidly following your comments because I'm in the process of buying a similar TV!

I did complain to Samsung. They said that none of their F series TVs have series record and they won't be doing a software upgrade.
