This review is from: Ashtanga Yoga (Paperback)
Dynamic yet spiritual, fast yet meditative, Astanga Yoga is increasingly popular in the western world. Flexibility, stamina, focus, as well as peace of mind and well- being are amongst its benefits. This manual by John Scott is a perfect guide to comprehend both the physical and the mystical side of this practice. The book, that includes also a useful bibliography and list of resources, opens with a foreword by Shri K Patthabi Jois, teacher of John Scott and maximum authority on Ashtanga yoga in the world. Photographs and detailed explanations of each stage of the postures (asanas) are accompanied by an account of the history and philosphy of Ashtanga yoga, with beautiful colour illustrations and the reproduction and translations of the Sanskrit mantras that traditionally open and close the Ashtanga practice. As the postures are illustrated in their final form only, the absolute beginner may find them too challenging. For everybody who works or has worked with a teacher, however, "Ashtanga Yoga" by John Scott is an inspiring text that not only gives a good guide (and practical tips!) to achieve those apparently impossible postures but also allows the reader to comprehend the true, powerful essence of Ashtanga yoga: the union of mind, body, and soul.
