1.0 out of 5 stars An insult to the series, 22 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Paranormal Activity 4 (Theatrical and Extended Versions) [DVD] (DVD)
First off, let me just rate the previous 3 films in the series.

Paranormal Activity 1: Original, scary, plenty of jump out of your seat moments, a good all round horror. 7/10

Paranormal Activity 2: A disappointing sequal but still enjoyable and had its moments none the less. 5/10

Paranormal Activity 3: The best of the bunch, after a slow start it is genuinely frightening, jump out scares at every turn and an ending that sends shivers down your spine. 9/10

And now onto Paranormal Activity 4: This film is a complete cash in on the franchise, it offers nothing new, there are almost no scares, no jumpy moments (unless you class 30 seconds of silence followed by a ginger cat hopping in front of the screen jumpy)

It is pretty much a young boyfriend and girlfriend (played believe it or not by a 15 year old actress who looks about 12 and a 23 year old actor who looks his age -Talk about a close to the bone mis-match) and for an hour and 15 minutes all they do is chat about rubbish, he wants to see her tiny boobs on the webcam, she thinks the neighbours little boy who befriends her brother is weird, the X-Box Kinnect can make your living room light up with dots etc, etc. That is it, seriously. Absolutely nothing scary happens during this time. We have a door close on its own (yawn) A chair moves in the kitchen (Yawn) and a kid keeps getting out of bed at 3am to talk to the X-Box. It is so monotonously boring that you wonder where the $5million budget went compared to the poultry $15,000 it cost to make the first, far superior film in the series.

If there's any saving grace in the film, it is the last 10 minutes which I admit, are well worth watching, as they do fit in nicely to the rest of the series. But what you need to ask yourself is this, is it really worth your time to sit through 75 minutes of watching 2 annoying leads talk about nothing in particular, before you finally get a few scares near the end? The acting and camera work isn't all that bad, but then, if you gave me $5million and an X-box, camcorder and a laptop, I'm pretty sure I could film the interior of a house just as well.

If you have seen the trailer for this one beforehand, don't be fooled, most of what you see in the trailer didn't make into the final cut of the film, so it seems that the producers decided to cut out all the decent bits to save for a possible directors cut, probably to fleece thier fans even more.

Paranormal Activity 5 is already being filmed and is due out in October this year. I think this installment has already killed the franchise and I'll be surprised if part 5 makes any impact at the cinema. On a plus side though, it can't possibly get any worse than this one.

As a massive fan of the series who looked forward to seeing the next installment, I have to say that part 4 was a complete rip off and a slap in the face to all horror fans. Avoid! 2/10 (for the last 10 minutes only)
