This book is set in and around Kingston upon Hull. Several strands of the story appear isolated until gradually the reader makes connections. Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy is a gentle giant of a Scotsman and pretty nifty with a database but is also a thinker a man who can make links. Fellow officers make an arrest but McAvoy knows this is not the guilty man.
I understand the author is or was a journalist and he certainly writes well. I very much enjoyed his use of language and was swiftly drawn into the story. Occasionally I found the present tense telling of the story a little intrusive. I prefer not to notice the tense but when I keep being reminded I think it's less successful. Altogether I really loved the story and didn't find the present tense business annoying enough to deduct stars. A really good read.
