4.0 out of 5 stars handbrake turn at the end, 2 Nov 2012
This review is from: Brake [DVD] (DVD)
This is a good film....almost. For the first 80 minutes or so Stephen Dorff (Special Agent Raynes) is trapped in a perspex box in the back of a car driven by terrorists with no escape. Think 'Buried' but better, because his captors are pretty sadistic, putting him through both mental and physical torture, and all the while a clock ticks down, restarts, ticks down, as different pieces of action start. Theres the threat to the lives of others - his colleagues, his wife, and glimpses of getting out of there - shards of hope - that are dashed in cruel fashion. All his captors want to know is which bunker the president is hiding in so they can kill him. And our special agent hero is refusing to spill the beans.

There are hints that all is not as it seems in the phone conversations, and here, the avid film fan may be able to see the ending coming before it does. When it comes the film should end there. Ok, we got it. We didn't need the second twist. In fact, it would have been miles better if the terrorists got wasted big-style. But this is America where whey snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It gets 4 stars because Stephen Dorff puts in an excellent performance. He's like an american Jason Statham, which is no bad thing, with a touch of Keifer Sutherland thrown in.Only Statham would have been amazing in this role and there would be a huge body-count. It is a well put together film with plenty of claustrophobic excitement, but I wanted Raynes to escape, get a gun, and start shooting everything in sight long before he finally did escape. But maybe thats the point of the film - making you feel this way?

So not bad. Well acted. Maybe a choice of ending would have been good. Just a bit frustrated that I didn't get the sort of ending that would have earned 5 stars.
