Certainly 5 Stars,
This review is from: Hard Rock Live (Audio CD)
This superb release consists of 1 cd and 1 dvd. The track listings are the same for both except for Sweet Little Sister which only appears on the dvd. This is presumably due to the time restraints on the cd.
From the first track to the last this concert really rocks. The 3 original surviving members of the band perform with Howard Leese on Guitar and Lynn Sorensen on bass. The band sound really on form and both picture and sound quality are excellent. Simon Kirke keeps the heartbeat as only he can and it is so good to see and hear Mick Ralphs performing with Paul Rodgers. So much has been written about Rogers but he is in a league of his own. His work with Free, Bad Company and his solo projects have all been significant. In this concert he is as good as ever. His voice is so strong and the overall general freshness of the music may well be due to the limited amount of time they have spent performing together in concert.
All the hits and better known songs are included in the set list with a couple that have been less commonly performed. Of the 17 tracks, all but 3 are from the first 3 albums. This gives a clear indication of how popular their early material still remains. I bought Straight shooter on vinyl as soon as it was released and now have all their cds to date - except that very scarce 1976 Live in Albuquerque, New Mexico concert! They say all great bands release at least 3 classic albums. Can this be said of Bad Company? Certainly the first 2 would be regarded by most as classic, but maybe not the third, although I really like it. After Run With the Pack the internal disputes about music, touring etc and an apparent lack of collective ideas stopped them really developing further. Subsequent albums by the same band members and new changes in personnel always seemed to contain some material of interest but many releases were unquestionably patchy.
This concert though is a real highlight, If I had to choose any tracks that stand out for me, I would select Seagull, Simple Man (always been a favourite of mine) and Rock Steady. This version of Rock Steady is without piano but is still a terrific take. Seagull is performed by the original three with Ralphs adding some subtle electric guitar. Contrast this to the very recently released 3 cd Wembley concert package. On this Seagull is acoustic throughout.
If you are an original fan then this is a must. I would also recommend it to anybody that enjoys good rock music but had not previously been drawn to Bad Company. After listening and watching this you will soon be searching to find other material to buy.
