This really is just a biography of Gubbins. Although the whole text is of course intimately connected with SOE, there is very little operational detail and the book is on the whole rather dry. It mainly focuses on the interplay between SOE, Governmental departments and foreign Governments in exile. Perhaps this is rather an unfair observation as the book is clearly a biography and to this extent it is a good one but one might hope for a little more substance.
