This review is from: Finding Graceland [DVD] (1998) (DVD)
this film works on many levels. the one that resonates most for me is the universal struggle to find peace, meaning and purpose in life. how much change can a day make in our lives? the answer is quite a lot.
the elvis character appears to be living in a fantasy world, possibly as a way of escaping his own inner demons. the marilyn character instead wears her mask just a few months of the year as a way of making some money. the film suggests to me the hollowness of idol worship. the central character of byron is stuck in the bitter grief of his own tragedy following his wife's death. but through his experiences on this road trip he finds hope, healing and the possibility of a new future. the bitterness and cynicism he seemed to be trapped in are processed and he can move on from this to a more positive life.
there is something bigger and beyond ourselves that people seem to be searching for. some would call it spirituality. all of us in our own way are looking for guidance and trying to find graceland.
the end credits say the film was dedicated to carl faber. for those interested in these deeper questions his own ideas can be found on the net.
