This review is from: Strauss: Operas Part II (Complete Recordings) (Audio CD)
These are well known recordings, Ariadne and Elektra having been issued by DG, Frau by Decca and Daphne by Preiser. Gramophone recently compared recordings of Ariadne and preferred Bohm on Orfeo which was indeed the top recommendation while giving this version favourable mention. Having at last heard the 1954 live version included here I declare a dead heat! Gueden as Zerbinetta is sheer delight.
Any one of these recordings is worth the cost of the set.
But there is a bonus CD of highlights. The Strauss 80th birthday excerpts from Ariadne are delightful. The wartime or pre-war Dresden recordings sound very fresh in these transfers, the highlights being the 1939 excerpts from Daphne sung by the soprano who premiered the role in 1938 and was much admired by the composer, Margarete Teschemacher. How sad we do not have a complete recording from her. This is an indispensable historical document.
I shall not bother to recommend this set. It is self-recommending.
