Light-hearted chick-lit, a sweet romance (3.5 stars),
This review is from: I'm in No Mood for Love (Little Black Dress) (Paperback)
I've had this book sat on my shelf forever, and today I fancied an easy-going, light-hearted girly read so thought I'd give this a shot. I'm pleased I did, this was a quick story that was easy to relate to with its likeable characters and fun plotline. Admittedly, the romance was a bit slow-burning for my liking, but I still enjoyed the novel and would definitely read more by Gibson in future.
The story focuses on rich girl Clare, horrified to return home unexpectedly and find her fiancé Lonny getting frisky with the washing machine repairman. Getting drunk to forget her troubles, Clare is even more mortified to wake up after her best friends wedding and find herself in bed with Sebastian Vaughan, her childhood menace and the last person on earth she should *ever* be in a compromising position with. This novel follows the ups and downs of Clare's life as she tries to come to terms with her betrayal as well as ignore the persistent overtures of hunky journalist Sebastian.
Granted, this was a fairly predictable plot and the reader knows what is going to happen in the end, but that didn't take away any of the nice writing style and the well-done characterisation. I think a lot of people can sympathise with Clare's predicament, as well as her constantly overbearing mother and lack of a father figure in her life. Emotions were conveyed nicely. Sebastian too, had depth, which made a nice change from a lot of your average chicklit- and there were some interesting family dynamics going on all round.
I have marked this book down because like I say, the romance aspect was quite slow burning here- it does take a long time to get going, so if you enjoy pacey romance novels then you might want to give this book a miss. The ending too, felt a bit rushed. Also, I did pick up on a couple of spelling/grammar errors that I found distracted me- this wasn't a kindle version after all! Nevertheless, if you want your guaranteed HEA then this is the book for you.
