5.0 out of 5 stars Buy an original version, to acknowledge the 'lost' years of a great artist, 15 Mar. 2013

This review is from: Searching For Sugar Man Soundtrack: All Songs By Rodriguez (Audio CD)
Rodriguez is unique and his life story is an amazing one. Disappearing into obscurity for a long time, he never received the accolades that his contemporaries did - e.g. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, et al. At least not until he was rediscovered, and even today many have not heard of him. He is one of the greatest, and learning from the film about the type of person he is and how he lives his life only adds to his reputation. As for 'Searching for Sugarman' the album, when was the last time you bought an album with lyrics worth listening to that are political, thought provoking, emotional and more?

Buy an original version, for all the Rodriguez records never sold, concert halls never filled, etc. back in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, when he was denied the global recognition he has always richly deserved.

Hi Wally, I am glad Amazon shows that you are a verified purchaser of this sound track. I agree completely with your comment except your injunction to other customers to "buy an original version" --- as you will know from watching the "Searching for Sugarman" documentary, Rodriguez has been cheated, and is still being cheated, by his former record label out of several decades of royalties due on his original albums "Cold Fact" and "Coming from Reality". As you will realise from the "making of..." part of the documentary that was included in the DVD, Rodriguez IS STILL NOT GETTING A CENT FROM THESE ALBUMS!!!!!

So if you respect the artist, as you clearly are, I will urge you to modify your Review title and change your recommendation to urge everyone to buy Rodriguez's music from this documentary soundtrack -- as this is the only output of his that we know reliably that actually PAYS Rodriguez his proper dues for the fruits of his decades' of labour (it actually states on the liner notes that Rodriguez is getting royalties from this album release).

If you want to recognise Rodriguez properly for his "lost years" therefore, do NOT buy his original albums as he's not getting a single cent from them. (See mlive.com for the lawsuit he's involved in now by his current record label against Avant). I actually deliberately researched the labels before purchasing his music, not that I am not in love with his music and his idealism, but because I don't want to become another one of the millions who bought his records but in fact was unwittingly stiffing him because the greedy record labels he signed to didn't -- and still don't -- manage to pay him ANYTHING.

Thank you.
