4.0 out of 5 stars Utopia Revisited? Well, almost..., 12 Aug 2011
This review is from: Sky Full Of Holes (Audio CD)
I almost didn't buy this, even though I've been a fan since the 90's, simply because I found their previous album so dull and uninspired. Thankfully, this one's a big step up from 'Traffic and Weather', and has a handful of songs on it that are as good as anything they've ever done. 'The Summer Place' is a really strong opener, and it's immediately followed by the wry comedy of 'Richie and Reuben' - a perfectly judged first two tracks. For me, the album then sags in the middle, with a few so-so numbers filling it out to an over-long 13 songs. Better editing down to a 35 minute running time could have kept up the momentum of the first two tracks and would made the album a real power-pop masterpiece. As it is, it's still a solid and entertaining record, and it's definitely well worth buying if you like this sort of thing.

Lol! I've just written a review of this album that almost says the EXACT opposite of your review. Quite uncanny really! Still, it just goes to show how subjective music can be eh?

Ha! Uncanny indeed. Would love to read your review - where is it? Meanwhile I'll go and wash out my cloth ears...

A somewhat late reply Mr D but my opposing review is one of the two 3 star reviews on this page (though I suspect you probably read it months if not years ago by now!). I would be interested to know though; do you still rate this album? Has it gone up or down in your estimations? Indeed, do you still PLAY it? Me? I still have a mild loathing for it (it's a loathing borne of love mind: I LOVE this band - and this album ticked me right off!)

I'm still not over it! ;)

I suggest you give it another chance, Kevin. I still enjoy it, and tracks like 'Acela' and 'Road Song' have grown on me over the years. I'd probably in retrospect put it a notch below 'Traffic and Weather', which I've come round to a lot more since I posted my original review, but I still think 'Sky Full of Holes' is a worthwhile record.
