This book was terrible. it was a mish mash of fantasy/new age/brutal violence and long tracts of straightforward exposition of historical facts (particularly painful were the pages and pages of descriptions of various battles and/or life at various european courts, which were dreary and utterly unbelievable). the narrative and "plot" device of having Hereward discovered living the life of a mystic at the top of some far off mountain, and describing his life and the mysterious talisman that he carried was absolutely preposterous and added nothing to the "story". The book was badly written, seemed hugely anachronistic and the new age-y garbage about spells, destiny, hidden meanings left me (literally) incredulous. Terrible at every level -fantasy novel, historical novel, new age mystical novel, "factual" drama, love story - ugh.
