Will it make your TV smart enough?,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sony BDPS4100 Smart 3D Blu-ray Disc Player (discontinued by manufacturer) (Electronics)
First of all, Amazon has the best service in my view. The day before I was at Currys but it felt like they were not interested in selling anything, so I ordered on Amazon and it arrived super fast one day later.
My main reason of buying this player was to add smart TV capability to my TV (which is a Regza about 4 years old). After reading several blogs and articles I was torn between getting something like Apple TV, Roku, etc, or a blue ray or a PS. PS comes at a much higher price, and the price of Apple and Roku is slightly more than what this Blue ray costs, so I went for it (also because its a Sony) noting also that it can play blu ray discs. One other feature that helped in my decision was that this one had full browser capability. Now after using this for about a month, I would have to say that I am a little disappointed - the player hangs up sometimes on Youtube. Yes I have updated the firmware. Also, some of the applications do not work - they give you an error message. The web browser is good to have but it is impossble to use with the remote - it is just too cumbersome. I tried attaching a wireless mouse but the player doesnt support it. TV sideview app is hardly equivalent to navigating as one could with a mouse.
In a nutshell, if one is looking to use apps like youtube, netflix etc, then this is fine. While some of the applications dont work, many do. But I would have expected Sony brand to do a better job than this. That said, the price is very reasonable when compared to Roku, or Apple. I tried playing blu ray discs and there is no problem in that area - works perfectly. I would give it 3 stars (but bear in mind that I am looking at it as a smart web device on top of a blu ray disc player).
