3.0 out of 5 stars Where are the classic Fairy Tale lines?, 10 Dec. 2008
This review is from: The Usborne Book of Fairy Tales: "Cinderella", "The Story of Rumpelstiltskin", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Sleeping Beauty", "Goldilocks and the Three Bears", "Three Little Pigs" (First Stories) (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my daughter because for the money it seemed a great deal, 5 Fairy tales for just £4.89, not too different to the amount I was going to pay for each book individually.

However, the author seems to have been so keen to compress the story lines that the stories read like a book synopsis all in the past tense. There are none of the classic Fairy Tale lines that young kids love to hear (particularly noticeable in "3 Little Pigs") like:
- Not by the hair of My Chinny-Chin-Chin, I will not let you in
- Then I will huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in

Not quite the same when your "young uns" can't join in and get excited by these classic lines.
On the other hand, the book doesn't cost too much and so isn't too bad value for money.

I just would like to say that this book is made to allow your child to start reading independently. That is way it is "compressed". It serves its purpose perfectly. If it would had been too long the child would have fallen asleep or got tired far before reaching the end. Its main purpose is not the big story telling. I think it is nicely done. Easiest sentence on the top, slightly harder on the bottom; nice pictures; this way the child is given the possibility to read a whole story in a reasonable time enhancing his/her confidence and is kept amused. My daughter is 3 years old, her mother tongue is not English, English is hardly spoken at home, etc but she is improving her reading thanks to books like these. She has got The Three Little Pigs already and she can now read it all by herself. If you are looking for a story to read to your child this book is not for you, but if you are looking for a story that can help and encourage your child to start reading independently than this book is definitely the right one at the right price.

I'd been very tempted by this book with a range of different tories - until I read the above review. I agree with Mr Swarbrick that phrases like
"Not by the hair of My Chinny-Chin-Chin, I will not let you in
- Then I will huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in"
Are part of the fun of the three little pigs.

We are dumbing down rather than stretching our children.
