Finally...uncut ALF on DVD,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: ALF - Series 1 (1986) (import) (DVD)
I thought I'd never see this series un-edited again. Alf was my favourite series / sitcom as a child and back in 2006 I was really excited that it was coming to DVD. Unfortunately the episodes (US releases) were butchered losing between 2 and 6 mins per episode. The episode entitled wild thing no longer made sense it was edited that much. They also cut most of the music as they didn't want to pay for the rights. Lionsgate said they couldn't clean up the original episodes as it would cost too much, so they released the US syndicated prints. Warner (as a bigger company?) have released this almost uncut, there's a Dutch release, a French and a German release (you can buy it from Amazon.de) They couldn't get the rights to a 40sec chipmunk song, they cut five seconds from the pilot with Alf and Willie in the bathroom, Alf's belch is removed when he slides the can across the TV (pilot) and the episode try to remember is the changed version. It's only a few seconds, in the rare version Alf is electrocuted in the bathtub and he walks out with his fur smoking. In the changed version he falls and bangs his head. This amounts to about 50 seconds of cut material. Because they edit for syndication US Networks take out most of the standalone scenes / funny bits so that they can keep the storyline intact. As a big fan I bought the region 1 DVD's, they have interactive menus and extras (unaired pilot, outtakes reel, trivia facts) these are missing from this DVD release which only has standard menus. The menus are in English and there's an English soundtrack too. This show hasn't dated, it's just as good now as it was in 1986. Only the clothes and sets are dated, but it doesn't spoil the fun. I hope we get a UK release in the future.
