Great fun. Highly recommended.,
This review is from: Project Gotham Racing 4 (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Well I've been playing this over the weekend, having bought it on Friday.
There are essentially 2 game modes. Arcade and Career. Arcade is a series of events with various difficulty levels (Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum). You can replay these to your hearts content.
Career is calender based. Mess up in one of these tournaments and you'll have to wait until next season to try and improve.
There are over 130 vehicles, ranging from a 1970s Cortina, to the McLaren F1. Each handles differently with ratings for speed, grip, drifting etc.
There are 12 weather conditions from fog, to rain, to snow, to storm.
It all works very well. There are multiple difficulty levels and you are not penalized in any way for playing career on easy, or normal, as opposed to hard.
There is plenty of opportunities for drifting and handbrake turns around hairpin bends and this is where PGR really stands out. The handling is not realistic, but it's not meant to be. The game makes it relatively easy to pull off great moves. Essentially, the A button initiates a drift.
I found the predecessor's (PGR3) handling to be much too twitchy, making controlling most of the cars a chore rather than a joy. In this version the handling feels spot on. Each car is given a difficulty rating so you can see which are more difficult to control. The Audi S4 for example, grips well, but it can be difficult to put it into a slide for that all important Kudos.....
Kudos is the game's currency. You buy car packs rather than individual cars, and there are also track packs available. You earn Kudos by winning events in both Arcade or Career modes, and also by performing the aforementioned cool moves.
After you're done racing there is an extensive photo mode and some truely staggering photos have been taken and shown off on various fan forums. It's easy to lose a lot of time watching a replay of a race waiting for the perfect place to take a photo. You can upload up to 5 at once to 'PGR on Demand' where other players can vote on your photos and replays.
Overall I think this is a fantastic game. I can't understand what's not to like. If you like semi-realistic (real cars, cities etc) racing games you'll enjoy this.
I also don't understand the comments about the graphics. They look absolutely phenomenal on my 720p HDTV. The textures and detail in some of the buildings (St Petersburg has a great example) is out of this world.
I'm trying to think of some negatives, but all I can think of after roughly 10 - 15 hours play is there is some framerate slowdow, though this is very infrequent, (so far twice I've noticed it) and doesn't really impact on gameplay.
