Poor as sci-fi; might appeal to Western fans,
This review is from: Firefly - The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)
'Firefly' is a mediocre American Western series set in outer space. Apart from adopting standard sci-fi clichés, it has little to do with science fiction, so if you appreciated Blake's Seven, you will probably find Firefly a waste of time. The interplay among the characters is also much less interesting than it is in Blake's Seven, and the series has little originality.
On the other hand, if you like Westerns, especially accompanied by a country-and-western soundtrack, and haven't read or watched much sci-fi, you might enjoy it. The special effects are competently done.
The actors are mediocre, with some unclear diction, which is inexcusable. Actors who mumble should not be tolerated.
The rating of one star is for the guidance of other sci-fi enthusiasts like myself. I'm not competent to rate it as a cowboy series, because I don't watch enough westerns, but the few I have watched are better than Firefly. I'm at a loss to understand why so many people rate it so highly.

A. Kane says:
Sorry, but Blake's 7 was not a good show. The pilot was amazing and it had a lot of potential, but it ultimately became a (very) low budgeted copy of Star Trek.
The clever political commentary was lost amongst rubber-headed aliens and other fantastic sci-fi indulgences.
Even the actor who played Blake dispaired with the direction the show took and left after the second season. I don't blame him.

No, I'm afraid Blake's Seven was and is complete rubbish, sub Gerry Anderson for script, and sub-Thunderbirds for acting. It was so awful, that I loved it for that.....

Speaking as a sci-fi enthusiast, your review is nonsensical.

G. Donaldson says:
I can't believe some of these comments - Blake's 7 is a true classic with brilliant dialogue and character relationships plus outstanding acting from Gareth Thomas and Stephen Greif in particular. Compare to Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999 (of which I am also a big fan) and Blake's 7 is obviously far superior in every aspect other than special effects and budget. Firefly is - in some ways - a 'reimagining' of Blake's 7. Indeed, Paul Darrow once said, "they have already remade Blake's 7, it's called Firefly /Serenity".
