Refreshing, refreshing, refreshing!,
This review is from: Chopin - Sonata No.2, Etudes op.25 (Audio CD)Let "refreshing" serve as a verb: Sokolov is refreshing Chopin.
Let it simultaneously serve as an adjective: This is truly refreshing Chopin.
Both are absolutely true, without qualification. This CD is a blessing.
All my life I've regarded Chopin's music as a comfortable refuge and a sure fire source of matinee satisfactions. Not even Rubinstein could jar me loose and shake me up. Now Sokolov comes along and swirls anger and bitterness from the Preludes, and on CD2 he proceeds with strength and a deliberate speed that forecloses dreaminess. Refreshed --- and how!
This is my first acquaintance with Sokolov and I'm squeezing my budget to acquire as many of his CDs as I can manage!
