This review is from: Temeraire (Temeraire 1) [a.k.a. His Majesty's Dragon] (Paperback)
No i couldn't finish! I was getting to the point where i was not looking forward to reading and i don't think life its long enough to read books that make you think that.
So why didn't i finish? Well pure and quite simply the main character is about as exciting as someone telling me they enjoy cars, oh and football in detail! Booorrrinnngggggg! the saving grace in the book is the dragons and that's why it was OK and 2 stars. I love history and alt. history is fun, but just oh my goodness this book seemed flat and just straight forward. I love descriptive writing and i like to have a good deal of detail in the back ground of something, i just felt it lacked it completely. I liked the world, it was ours after all and i love dragons but it did nothing for me.
I was bored of Laurence calling Temeraire "my dear" (Just get naked and rub yourself up against him you know you want too Laurence!!) I was bored of the old fashion speech "you have the pleasure of me" ugh (yes i know it makes the story because it how they would have spoke and the author has researched it well blah blah yes i've read the good reviews) and I was bored of formality.
I read a spoiler on this so i know how it ends. Still i feel no loss at finishing now or accidentally reading a spoiler half way through a book so this definitely was not the book for me and the first time i loathed a main character.
oh i forgot the part where the dragons are so huge that they can have a whole crew on board all attached to a huge harness WTF!? no....just no! i just can't picture it, all i can picture is lots of little wee men being flung everywhere whilst this dragon fights, but apparently they are signalling and walking around the beast attached by the harness paying no attention to the wind, there is no mention of goggles? am i the only person to think this?
Now where's the more exciting books?.....ah here we are.
