Best 59p I've ever spent!,

This review is from: The Haunts & Horrors Megapack: 31 Modern & Classic Stories (Kindle Edition)
I think I would prefer to give this 3.5 stars but the option does not exist. I have gone for the higher rating as it was so cheap, and I enjoyed reading it, so think that's fairer.
I found the title/front of this "book" a bit off putting. The phrase "megapack" puts me in mind of those big packs of kitchen roll or crisps you can buy in the supermarket.
I was looking for an old short story I read many years ago, by Seabury Quinn, and hoped the tale in here by Quinn,"Birthmark" was the one (it wasn't), hence why I bought it.
The collection is an anthology of new and classic tales. M.R James ("A Residence at Whitminster"), and the old favourite by W W Jacobs, "The Monkey's Paw" get an airing. Ambrose Bierce, Guy Du Maupassant and H.P Lovecraft also feature.
I had already read these stories, but enjoyed re-reading them.
Some of the stories are absolute junk, but I did enjoy "The Muffin Man", a rather humorous modern story, and "Vengeance in Her Bones", a rather strange, old fashioned feeling tale about a haunted ship and the old seadog who captains her.
There was also a really funny story, "The Silent Majority", which alone was well worth paying 59p for. It involves Richard Nixon rising from the grave to save America, and the world, from a zombie apocalypse (yes, really).
If you are a keen reader of the horror tale, you will have already read the classic stories in this book. And, to be fair, the newer/lesser stories are not that great. Readable, and even funny- but they didn't blow my hair back.
However, for an enjoyable, cheap read, it was well worth the price.
