Great Adaptation Of A True Story!,
This review is from: Escape From Alcatraz [DVD] (DVD)
Every now and then its nice to see an actor such as Clint Eastwood playing a slightly different role to what he usually does and still manage to do a great job. Don Siegel, the director of 'Escape From Alcatraz' also directed Eastwood in a number of other hit movies and this 1979 drama based on a true story about a daring escape from the island prison of Alcatraz.
Clint Eastwood plays Frank Morris a new prisoner at the ominus island prison, Alcatraz. He soon makes friends (although not with the warden) and together they decide to escape, some how. Frank notices that the concrete walls of the cells have become rotten by the salty sea air, and he soon begins digging. Together they hatch a plan and dissappear in the middle of the night, but with the guards on their tail, will they survive.
Clint is brilliant in his role as Frank Morris, adding character and bringing him to life, and even manages a few punch ups with a fellow prisoner, a massive monster of a man called Wolf. There is also the occassional Clint one-liners that we all know and love, for example, in the prison courtyard there is a great scene between him and another prisoner. Jack Thibeau and Fred Ward who play the two prisoners who escape with Frank, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin, respectively. Patrick McGoohan who starred TV series 'The Prisoner' plays the warden at the time when Frank and the others break out, and he is great in his role.
Overall, 'Escape From Alcatraz' although not like any other Clint Eastwood films, its certainly a great film, and deserves all the praise it gets. If you are a fan of Eastwood, prison films, or are interested in what actually happened in real life at Alcatraz, then this film is for you. If you want to find out even more about the true events then there are a number of good books. Enjoy!
