Delightful Crime Actioner,
This review is from: Contraband [DVD] (DVD)
'Contraband' is an action-crime thriller that released in 2012 to mixed response, however turned into a box-office hit. The movie is directed by Baltasar Kormákur who starred in the original Icelandic version titled 'Reykjavík-Rotterdam'. The original is one of the most expensive Icelandic films of all-time and released in 2008 to critical acclaim. On its release, 'Reykjavík-Rotterdam' won five Edda awards (Icelandic Film Awards), which included an award for best director (Óskar Jónasson).
The film tells the story of an ex-smuggler, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) who is forced into doing one last job by a drug lord (Giovanni Ribisi), in order to protect his family.
Yes, the plot is clichéd but it's a delight for an action junkie like me. It's a fast-driven taut thriller from beginning to end. There are exciting action set-pieces, enough suspense and the feature is beautifully shot with cracking sweeping shots of New Orleans, Louisiana and Panama. With a few added twists, I'm a happy man.
The film has a good star cast with Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi. All perform well and equally stand-out.
The direction by Baltasar Kormákur reminds me of the golden action movies of the 80's. Kormákur comes up with a typical yet cool and effective action offering.
I'm a big, big fan of James Horner who has provided exciting background music for so many action movies in the past. Clinton Shorter on this occasion does a fab job by scoring a James Horneresque background music, tune to my ears.
'Contraband' is an energetic action flick.
